Member Monday: Nick

As a kid growing up in Madison, Nick’s favorite book was The Little Prince. This year, Nick served at Sandburg elementary; his favorite book on the Sandburg shelves was Caps for Sale.

Nick heard about Schools of Hope at a job fair hosted by UW–Madison, his alma mater. He chose Schools of Hope because of its location in Madison and the mission: to promote literacy achievement in elementary school students. During his time as a literacy tutor, Nick enjoyed seeing the difference his work, and his volunteers’ work, with students, made to their academic and personal lives. To him, “national service means doing something good for the all the people of the nation.” When Nick sees that certain sort of smile a kid beams when she learns a new word or finishes a book, he knows that, indeed, he is doing something good.

During his time at Sandburg, Nick was surprised to learn that recess is still fun–even as an adult! When Nick is not reading a book, writing, or throwing a ball with students, you can find him exercising, playing chess or eating tacos. For those future members, “you should be prepared to become fully immersed in the school environment.” At that point, when Nick’s term of service has commenced and different members are on the team, he will be pursuing a career in youth fitness and reading The Brothers Karamazov.
